SECONDARY SCHOOLS TEACHERS’ PERCEPTION ON BRING YOUR OWN DEVICE (BYOD) AMONG LEARNERS IN NIGERIA

Abstract

In Nigeria, educators are exploring the role of technology in improving secondary education, focusing on the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) initiative. This study found that Nigerian secondary school teachers generally support BYOD, recognizing its potential to enhance student engagement and provide personalized learning while reducing school costs. However, concerns remain about security risks, unequal access to devices, and the need for adequate technical support. Teachers' views were consistent across gender and school type (private vs. public), indicating broad acceptance of BYOD. The study highlights the need for careful planning in implementing BYOD, including addressing infrastructure limitations and providing necessary teacher training. It also stresses the importance of tackling equity issues, suggesting solutions like school-provided devices or affordability partnerships. Ultimately, successful BYOD implementation in Nigerian schools requires strategic collaboration among teachers, parents, and the community, with a clear plan and sufficient resources.
