Adapting, Thriving, and Leading in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: A Study on the Evolving Competencies of Data Professionals

Abstract

This paper investigates the evolving competencies required of data professionals as Artificial Intelligence (AI) becomes integral to data analytics, business intelligence, and decision-making. Using a mixed-method approach that combines an extensive review of contemporary industry and academic literature (2020–2025) with a modeled empirical survey of 120 practitioners, the study identifies critical skill gaps in machine learning proficiency, ethical and governance literacy, and leadership for AI projects. The paper proposes an AI-Readiness Competency Framework and offers policy, education, and organizational recommendations to support sustainable upskilling. Findings emphasize that technical mastery alone is insufficient; data professionals must also develop ethical judgment, translational communication skills, and continuous learning mindsets to lead responsible AI integration.
