ASSESSING THE PEDAGOGICAL EFFECTIVENESS OF MULTIMEDIA INSTRUCTIONAL PACKAGE AS AN INNOVATIVE ENHANCER OF COLLEGES OF EDUCATION STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENT AND INTEREST IN MATHEMATICS

Abstract

Mathematics is critical to education and technology, yet many students in Nigerian Colleges of Education struggle with mathematical concepts such as Set theory.This study addresses the gap in pedagogical approaches by evaluating the potential of multimedia-based instructional packages to enhance student achievement and interest. The purpose of the study was to assess the pedagogical effectiveness of the Multimedia Projection Instructional Package on students' achievement and interest in Set concepts. The study employed a quasi-experimental, non-equivalent control group design.It involved 200 NCE II students from three Colleges of Education in South-South Nigeria, selected through purposive sampling.Data were collected using the Multimedia Projection Instructional Package on Set (MUMPIPAS), Set AchievementTest (SAT), and Set Multimedia Projection Instructional Package Interest Questionnaire (SEMIPIQ).Mean and standard deviation were used to answer research questions, and ANCOVA was applied to test hypotheses. Students taught with MUMPIPAS achieved a mean score gain of 39.78 compared to 10.78 for those taught conventionally, showing a significant difference in achievement (F = 147.19, p < 0.05). Interest scores also improved significantly with a mean gain of 0.71 for the experimental group compared to 0.41 for the control group (F = 71.09, p < 0.05). Female students showed slightly higher gains in achievement and interest than their male counterparts. MUMPIPAS significantly enhances students' achievement and interest in mathematics, particularly Set concepts, over traditional teaching methods.It is recommended that this innovative approach be integrated into the teaching of mathematics in Nigerian Colleges of Education to foster better learning outcomes.
